Today we talk about a wonderful country north of Rome: Calcata.
The village of Calcata is considered one of the most enchanting landscapes of Lazio, a peninsula that captivates the viewer and projects it into an indefinite era, where the suggestions inspired by nature are added to those of a magical and arcane Middle Ages.
Founded in the pre-medieval period, from the 1930s the town began to become depopulated due to the frequent collapse of the fragile tuff cliff. This, at least, until the years immediately after the war, when the village was saved from the downfall.
Now completely abandoned and exposed to the subsidence of the land, Calcata was then called the "dying country". An appellative, this, which at the same time was given to the most famous Civita di Bagnoregio.
However, thanks to its decadent and surreal charm, the village gradually began to be repopulated by artists, artisans and intellectuals who, starting in the 1960s, came from all over the world in search of a genuine and contrasting dimension of life. with the pressing industrial and consumerist society. Also within the Valle del Treja Regional Park, the nearby Montegelato Waterfalls are definitely not to be missed.
Here, in an enchanting scenery, the Treja glides impetuously on a bed of volcanic rock, forming numerous jumps and waterfalls and then creeping between the high and red tuff walls, where lush vegetation climbs. A truly original landscape, which in the past years aroused the interest of cinematography, which I use as a location for numerous independent Western films, transforming the gorges into canyons and the high plains into prairies.
A secret place in the middle of Lazio!
The country museum of rural culture is also very beautiful, where you can admire tools, toys and provisions from the last century. You will find Ettore there to welcome you, who will tell you about a forgotten Italy, the Second World War and much more.
Here a toy kitchen, but not so much: the fire is lit, the water comes out and it works like a real kitchen!

Oggi vi parliamo di un meraviglioso paese a nord di Roma: Calcata.
Il borgo di Calcata è considerato uno dei più incantevoli paesaggi laziali, penisola che rapisce lo spettatore e lo proietta in un’epoca indefinita, ove alle suggestioni ispirate dalla natura si aggiungono quelle di un medioevo magico e arcano.
Nata in epoca premedioevale, dagli anni ’30 del Novecento il paese iniziò a spopolarsi a causa dei frequenti crolli della fragile rupe tufacea. Questo, almeno, fino agli anni immediatamente posteriori alla guerra, quando il borgo si salvò dall’abbattimento.
Ormai completamente abbandonata ed esposta ai cedimenti del terreno, Calcata fu allora chiamata il “paese che muore”. Un appellativo, questo, che allo stesso tempo era conferito alla più celebre Civita di Bagnoregio. Tuttavia proprio grazie al suo fascino decadente e surreale, il borgo cominciò man mano a essere ripopolato da artisti, artigiani ed intellettuali che, a partire dagli anni ’60, vennero da ogni parte del mondo in cerca di una dimensione di vita genuina e in contrasto con l’incalzante società industriale e consumistica.
Sempre all’interno del Parco Regionale Valle del Treja, sono sicuramente da non perdere le vicine Cascate di Montegelato.
Qui, in uno scenario incantevole, il Treja scivola impetuoso su di un letto di roccia vulcanica, formando numerosi salti e cascatelle per poi insinuarsi tra le alte e rosse pareti tufacee, ove rigogliosa si inerpica la vegetazione. Un paesaggio davvero originale, che negli anni passati suscitò l’interesse della cinematografia, che lo utilizzo come location per numerosi film Western indipendenti, trasformando di volta in volta le rupi delle gole in canyon e gli alti pianori in praterie.
Molto bello anche il museo della civiltà contadina all'interno al paese, dove potrete ammirare utensili, giocattoli e vettovaglie dello scorso secolo.
