Today we want to take you to a special place, set of numerous Italian films, Vulci!
Vulci is a natural park that covers the whole area that runs alongside the Fiora river, until the river flows into the suggestive Pellicone lake. The lake and its small waterfall, for their singular beauty, were the protagonists of some important Italian films: Non Ci Resta che Piangere (scene in which Mario and Saverio meet Leonardo da Vinci) and Three Men and A Leg by Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo.
The particular feature of the lake is the dark rock of the canyons above it, the result of ancient lava flows. Furthermore, with the same stones, the blocks of the decumanus of Vulci were made, the main street of the city that connected the two east and west gates. The Pellicone lake is located right at the foot of the acropolis of the ancient city of Vulci. For these reasons it is possible to swim in the park, to see some Etruscan tombs and the ancient city of Vulci, a must!

Speaking of the city of Vulci, this began to form around the 11th century BC. on a large plateau overlooking the course of the Fiora river, not far from the Tyrrhenian coast. It was destroyed by the Romans in 280 BC.
Continuing the route, however, we can go up to the Badia Bridge, also called the Devil's Bridge, an imposing structure that shows different construction phases. The name Ponte del Diavolo was given by the population in medieval times, as by belief of the time (unaware of Roman and Etruscan sizes) only the Devil was able to make such a bridge with such high and wide arches.
The badia bridge was in fact a bridge that in the different historical periods has always played a fundamental strategic role.
In fact, in the Etruscan-Roman era, the bridge followed what was one of the most important communication axes between the cities of internal Etruria. In fact, a few hundred meters away, this road reached the North Gate of Vulci, one of the most important cities of the Etruscan Dodecapoli.
This strategic importance did not diminish in the Middle Ages, and in fact dates back to this period the Castello della Badia, which dominates the southwest side of the left bank of the Flora river. This fortification not only played a role of control over the road, it also dominated the surrounding area.
A few minutes from the archaeological natural park of Vulci there are also the beautiful Terme di Vulci. Completely immersed in the countryside of Tuscia as if they were a small wellness oasis, these spas were inaugurated only recently and are among the most beautiful in the Tosco-Lazio area.
How to get to Vulci
From the south: Rome-Tarquinia highway, then continue on State Road 1 until the exit for Vulci. From here continue on the Provincial Road of Fiora and turn onto the Strada dalle Badia.
From the north: Livorno-Grosseto road, then continue on the Aurelia state road until the exit for Montalto di Castro, take the Aurelia state road 1 again northwards and take the Vulci exit, then continue on the Fiora provincial road and then on that of Badia.
From the east: Orte-Viterbo highway to Viterbo, then continue following the signs for Montalto di Castro. Once in Montalto di Castro continue on the SS 1 Aurelia road heading north and exit at Vulci, continue on the Fiora Provincial Road and then on the Badia Road.

Oggi vogliamo portarvi in un posto speciale, set di numerosi film italiani, Vulci!
Vulci è un parco naturalistico che interessa tutta l’area che costeggia il fiume Fiora, fino a quando il fiume si getta nel suggestivo Laghetto del Pellicone. Il lago e la sua piccola cascata, per la loro singolare bellezza, sono stati protagonisti di alcuni importanti film italiani: Non Ci Resta che Piangere (scena in cui Mario e Saverio incontrano Leonardo da Vinci) e Tre Uomini e Una Gamba di Aldo, Giovanni e Giacomo.
La caratteristica particolare del lago è la roccia scura dei canyon che lo sovrastano, frutto di antichissime colate laviche. Con le stesse pietre inoltre, vennero realizzati i blocchi del decumano di Vulci, la via principale della città che collegava le due porte est e ovest. Il Laghetto del Pellicone sorge proprio ai piedi dell’acropoli dell’antica città di Vulci. Per questi motivi nel parco è possibile fare il bagno, vedere delle tombe etrusche e la città antica di Vulci, imperdibile!
Parlando della città di Vulci, questa iniziò a formarsi intorno al XI secolo a.C. su un grande pianoro che sovrastava il corso del fiume Fiora, a non molta distanza dalla costa tirrenica. Venne distrutta dai romani nel 280 a.C.
Proseguendo invece il percorso ci possiamo spingere fino al Ponte della Badia, chiamato anche ponte del diavolo, una struttura imponente che mostra diverse fasi costruttive. Il nome Ponte del Diavolo fu dato dalla popolazione in epoca medievale, in quanto per credenza dell’epoca (ignari delle grandezze romane ed etrusche) solo il Diavolo era in grado di realizzare un ponte del genere con archi così alti ed ampi.
Il ponte della badia fu infatti un ponte che nelle diverse epoche storiche ha sempre giocato un ruolo strategico fondamentale.
Infatti in epoca etrusco-romana, il ponte seguiva quella che era uno degli assi di comunicazione più importanti tra le città dell’Etruria interna. A poche centinaia di metri infatti tale strada giungeva presso la Porta Nord di Vulci, una delle città più importante della Dodecapoli Etrusca.
Tale importanza strategica non diminuì nel medioevo, ed infatti risale proprio a questo periodo il Castello della Badia, che domina il lato sud-ovest della riva sinistra del fiume Flora. Tale fortificazione oltre che a svolgere un ruolo di controllo sulla via, dominava anche il territorio circostante.
A pochi minuti dal parco naturalistico archeologico di Vulci sorgono inoltre le bellissime Terme di Vulci. Completamente immerse nelle campagne della Tuscia come fossero una piccola oasi di benessere, queste terme sono state inaugurate solo recentemente e sono tra le più belle del territorio Tosco-Laziale.
Come arrivare a Vulci
Da sud: autostrada Roma-Tarquinia, poi proseguire sulla Strada Statale 1 fino all’uscita per Vulci. Da qui proseguire sulla Strada Provinciale del Fiora e svoltare sulla Strada dalle Badia.
Da nord: strada Livorno-Grosseto, poi proseguire sulla Strada Statale 1 Aurelia fino all’uscita per Montalto di Castro, riprendere nuovamente la Strada Statale 1 Aurelia in direzione nord e prendere l’uscita per Vulci, poi proseguire sulla Strada Provinciale del Fiora e poi su quella della Badia.
Da est: superstrada Orte-Viterbo fino a Viterbo, poi proseguire seguendo le indicazioni per Montalto di Castro. Arrivati a Montalto di Castro proseguire sulla Strada Statale 1 Aurelia in direzione nord e uscire a Vulci, proseguire sulla Strada Provinciale del Fiora e poi su quella della Badia.
