Today we wanna talk about Beseno Castle, amazing place!
Beseno Castle is considered the largest and most imposing fortification in all of Trentino Alto Adige. It is located on a hill in the municipality of Besenello, in a decidedly panoramic and strategic point, to ensure maximum visibility on the surrounding area from which any enemy attacks could come.
The first news of the castle dates back to the XII century in which the owners were the Da Beseno family. After being handed over to various noble and powerful families of the time, the Beseno castle was donated to the province of Trento which transformed it into a real military fortification, inevitably becoming the stage of several battles.
Left for several years to the neglect of the time, the structure was subject to significant renovations carried out during the mid-twentieth century.
What can be admired today is a fantastic example of a Renaissance fortress, consisting of three mighty ramparts and an imposing city wall that protects the housing nucleus.
Seen from above, the fortification takes on an elliptical shape with a length of about 250 meters and a width of 50 meters.
Once you reach the ticket office and pay the entrance ticket, you will be provided with a map of the structure containing technical and historical information.
The visit will then take place intuitively following a path that will lead to every corner of the castle, both inside and outside. What most characterizes the imposing fortress are the three bastions strategically positioned in different corners of the hill and the immense city walls that surround the inhabited center.
Along the way you will meet several doors that served to protect the different sectors of the castle; some of them are strategically positioned in order to prevent perfect visibility by enemies in the attack phase.
At first there were two distinct fortifications, subsequently connected to each other and surrounded by further walls.
Nothing is left to chance, every single element of the castle has been studied in detail to ensure maximum defense in the event of an enemy attack. Walking inside the walls you have the feeling of being perfectly protected and safe from any possible attack. Going up on the ramparts of the ramparts you can enjoy a wonderful 360 ° panorama over the entire surrounding valley.
Castel Beseno is one of the four castles that make up the Provincial Museum of Buonconsiglio. The other 3 museums are located inside the Buonconsiglio Castle in Trento, the Stenico Castle and the Thun Castle in Vigo di Ton.
Inside the castle there is therefore an exhibition space and bookshop where you can see provincial art collections, divided into sections of archeology, ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary art.
The numerous events that are organized every year both inside the structure and in the green and well-kept lawn, protected by the external walls, are of great importance. Among them, the most evocative are certainly the historical re-enactments that lend themselves well in this scenario of the past.
The events are mostly concentrated in the spring-autumn period, even if in any case there is no shortage in the winter period.
In addition to the classic visit to the castle, themed activities are organized involving both school groups and families; of course, everything revolves around the history and culture of the place.

How to get that?
Castel Beseno is about 20 km from the city of Trento and can only be reached by car via the SS 12 towards Besenello. Alternatively, you can come from the south from the city of Rovereto, which is about ten kilometers away, or from the road that connects the Adige valley to Folgaria.

Il Castello di Beseno è considerata la più vasta ed imponente fortificazione di tutto il Trentino Alto Adige. Esso si trova adagiato su una collina del comune di Besenello, in un punto decisamente panoramico e strategico, per garantire la massima visibilità sul territorio circostante da cui potevano sopraggiungere eventuali attacchi nemici.
Le prime notizie del castello risalgono al XII secolo in cui i proprietari risultavano la famiglia Da Beseno. Dopo essere passato in mano a varie nobili e potenti famiglie dell’epoca, il castello di Beseno venne donato alla provincia di Trento che lo trasformò in una vera e propria fortificazione militare divenendo inevitabilmente palcoscenico di diverse battaglie.
Lasciata per diversi anni all’incuria del tempo, la struttura fu soggetta a notevoli opere di ristrutturazione effettuate nel corso della metà del XX secolo.
Quello che si può ammirare oggi è un fantastico esempio di fortezza rinascimentale, costituita da tre possenti bastioni e da un’imponente cinta muraria che protegge il nucleo abitativo.
Vista dall’alto la fortificazione assume una forma ellittica con una lunghezza di circa 250 metri e una larghezza di 50 metri.
Una volta raggiunta la biglietteria e pagato il biglietto d’ingresso, si verrà dotati di una piantina della struttura contenente informazioni tecniche e storiche.
La visita avverrà poi in maniera intuitiva seguendo un percorso che condurrà in ogni angolo del castello, sia interno che esterno. Quello che caratterizza di più l’imponente fortezza sono i tre bastioni posizionati strategicamente in diversi angoli della collina e l’immensa cinta muraria che circonda il nucleo abitato.
Lungo il percorso si incontreranno diverse porte che fungevano a proteggere i diversi settori del castello; alcune di esse sono posizionate in maniera strategica al fine di impedire la perfetta visibilità da parte dei nemici in fase di attacco.
In un primo tempo esistevano due distinte fortificazioni, successivamente collegate tra loro e contornate da ulteriori cinta murarie.
Nulla è lasciato al caso, ogni singolo elemento del castello è stato studiato nei minimi particolari per garantire la massima difesa in caso di attacco nemico. Passeggiando all’interno delle mura si ha la sensazione di essere perfettamente protetti e sicuri da ogni possibile attacco. Salendo poi sui camminamenti dei bastioni si potrà godere di uno stupendo panorama a 360° su tutta la vallata circostante.
Castel Beseno è uno dei quattro castelli che compongono il Museo provinciale del Buonconsiglio. Gli altri 3 musei sono presenti all’interno del Castello del Buonconsiglio di Trento, del Castello di Stenico e del Castello di Thun a Vigo di Ton.
All’interno del castello si trova pertanto uno spazio espositivo e bookshop in cui si possono vedere collezioni provinciali d'arte, suddivise nelle sezioni d'archeologia, d’arte antica, medievale, moderna e contemporanea.
Grande rilievo hanno invece le numerose manifestazioni che si organizzano ogni anno sia all’interno della struttura che nel verde e curato prato, protetti dalle cinta murarie esterne. Tra esse le più suggestive sono di certo le rievocazioni storiche che ben si prestano in questo scenario d’altri tempi.
Le manifestazioni si concentrano maggiormente nel periodo primavera-autunno anche se comunque non mancano in quello invernale.
Oltre alla classica visita del castello vengono organizzate delle attività a tema che coinvolgono sia le scolaresche che le famiglie; il tutto naturalmente ruota intorno alla storia e alla cultura del luogo.
Come arrivare
Castel Beseno dista circa 20 km dalla città di Trento ed è raggiungibile solo con l’auto tramite la SS 12 in direzione Besenello. In alternativa si può giungere da sud dalla città di Rovereto da cui dista una decina di chilometri oppure dalla strada che collega la valle dell’Adige a Folgaria.
