Today we want to offer you a really interesting place: the village of Farfa and the abbey of Farfa. Farfa, despite being a little-known place, was a very important medieval (and later) shopping center.
The village was a crossroads of merchants, shops and artisans, and the abbey bears witness to the importance of the village itself. Farfa was an imperial abbey, released from papal control, but very close to the Holy See, so much so that its abbot was the head of a suburbicarian diocese.
At the height of its power the abbey controlled 600 churches and monasteries, 132 castles or strongholds and 6 fortified cities, for a total of more than 300 villages: it was said that the abbot shadowed the pope's power, but in In reality his power was that of a true imperial legate charged with defending Lazio and representing imperial interests with the Holy See. During the reign of Charlemagne, the abbey had the maximum building development, which changed the original structure so much that it was only recently possible to reconstruct it. In a few decades it became one of the most famous and prestigious centers of medieval Europe. The abbey of Santa Maria di Farfa was founded between 560 and 570 by Lorenzo bishop of Forum Novum. Charlemagne himself, a few weeks before being crowned in St. Peter's on December 25th 800, visited the abbey and stayed there. To understand the economic importance of Farfa it is sufficient to think that in the third decade of the ninth century, under the abbot Ingoaldo, it possessed a commercial ship exempted from the duties of the ports of the Carolingian empire.
Not far away, a visit to the Gole del Farfa, the river that gives its name to the whole area, is inevitable. The natural monument of the Gole del Farfa is a protected area of 35 hectares located between the municipality of Castelenuovo di Farfa and that of Mompeo, in the province of Rieti, in the territory of the Bassa Sabina, and is part of the Regional Natural Reserve Nazzano Tevere Farfa.
A secret place in the middle of Italy!
Just 50 km from Rome, ideal for a day trip from the capital, the Farfa Gorges are a true paradise for lovers of trekking and nature. Surprise anyone who ventures along their path, for the lush vegetation and crystal clear water that over the centuries has formed bends and canyons. Such a particular nature, uncontaminated and full of colors, until today in Sabina we found it only in the karst sinkhole of the Revotano in the municipality of Roccantica: here too, like the Gole del Farfa, the trees are surrounded by long beards of very green mosses , which proliferate thanks to the proximity to water and humidity. Walking along the Gorges of Farfa you will be able to push yourself into a wood of holm oaks, oaks and hornbeams; and still poplars and willows that have formed a true gallery forest. The bed of pebbles in which the Farfa flows contributes to making the waters of this stretch of the river particularly clear, waters that sometimes seem to become almost white because of the frothiness that is created in the vortices and in the natural cascades that are encountered along the way. The waters of the Farfa river are ideal for canyoning, rafting and hydrospeed enthusiasts. During the summer, in fact, thanks to the intense daily withdrawal of water that is channeled into the Peschiera Aqueduct together with the dry season, the Gorges can be walked more easily. During the peak periods the matter becomes decidedly more complex and risky. It goes without saying that to venture into a canyoning experience in Farfa you will need helmet and wetsuit, at least! And also a good guide, unless you are already an expert.

How to reach the Farfa Gorges?
Here, we come to the most difficult part because it is not at all easy to explain how to get exactly to the point where the path starts to reach the Farfa Gorges. There are no signs on the site, nor in Castelnuovo di Farfa. The indication found on Google Maps by entering in the search "Gole del Farfa" does not take you to the right place. The exact address is Via Cornazzano, 02031 - Castelnuovo di Farfa - Rieti and below the link to the exact point from which to take the path to the Gorges.

Oggi vogliamo proporvi un luogo davvero interessante: il borgo di Farfa e l'abbazia di Farfa.
Farfa, nonostante sia un luogo poco conosciuto, è stato un centro commerciale di epoca medioevale (e successiva) molto importante. Il borgo era un crocevia di commercianti, botteghe ed artigiani, e l'abbazia testimonia l'importanza del borgo stesso. Farfa era un'abbazia imperiale, svincolata dal controllo pontificio, ma vicinissima alla Santa Sede, tant'è vero che il suo abate era a capo di una diocesi suburbicaria.
Nel momento più alto della sua potenza l'abbazia controllava 600 tra chiese e monasteri, 132 castelli o piazzeforti e 6 città fortificate, per un totale di più di 300 villaggi: si diceva che l'abate facesse ombra alla potenza del papa, ma in realtà il suo potere era quello di un vero e proprio legato imperiale incaricato della difesa del Lazio e della rappresentanza degli interessi imperiali presso la Santa Sede.
Durante il regno di Carlo Magno, l'abbazia ebbe il massimo sviluppo edilizio, che ne modificò così tanto la struttura originale che solo di recente è stato possibile ricostruirla. In pochi decenni divenne uno dei centri più conosciuti e prestigiosi dell'Europa medievale.
L'abbazia di Santa Maria di Farfa fu fondata tra 560 e 570 da Lorenzo vescovo di Forum Novum . Carlo Magno stesso, poche settimane prima di essere incoronato in san Pietro il 25 dicembre 800, visitò l'abbazia e vi sostò. Per comprendere l'importanza economica di Farfa basti pensare che nel terzo decennio del IX secolo, sotto l'abate Ingoaldo, essa possedeva una nave commerciale esentata dai dazi dei porti dell'impero carolingio.
A poca distanza, immancabile è la visita alle Gole del Farfa, il fiume che da il nome a tutta la zona. Il monumento naturale delle Gole del Farfa è un’area protetta di 35 ettari situata tra il comune di Castelenuovo di Farfa e quello di Mompeo, in provincia di Rieti, nel territorio della Bassa Sabina, e fa parte della Riserva Naturale Regionale Nazzano Tevere Farfa.
A soli 50 km da Roma, ideali per una escursione di un giorno dalla Capitale, le Gole del Farfa sono un vero paradiso per gli amanti del trekking e della natura. Sorprendono chiunque si avventuri lungo il loro percorso, per la vegetazione lussureggiante e per l’acqua cristallina che nel corso dei secoli ha formato anse e canyon. Una natura così particolare, incontaminata e carica di colori, fino ad oggi in Sabina l’abbiamo ritrovata solo nella dolina carsica del Revotano nel comune di Roccantica: anche qui, come alle Gole del Farfa, gli alberi sono avvolti da lunghe barbe di muschi verdissimi, che proliferano grazie alla vicinanza con l’acqua e l’umidità.
Costeggiando le Gole del Farfa potrai spingerti all’interno di un bosco di lecci, cerri e carpini; e ancora pioppi e salici che hanno formato una vera foresta a galleria.
Il letto di ciottoli in cui scorre il Farfa contribuisce a rendere particolarmente limpide le acque di questo tratto di fiume, acque che a volte sembrano diventare quasi bianche per via della spumosità che si crea nei vortici e nelle cascatelle naturali che si incontrano lungo il percorso.
Le acque del fiume Farfa sono ideali per gli appassionati di canyoning, rafting e hydrospeed.
Durante l’estate, infatti, complice l’intenso prelievo quotidiano di acqua che viene incanalata nell’Acquedotto del Peschiera unito alla secca stagionale, le Gole sono percorribili con più facilità. Durante i periodi di piena la faccenda si fa decisamente più complessa e rischiosa.
Va da sé che per avventurarsi in un’esperienza di canyoning nel Farfa vi serviranno casco e muta, almeno! E anche una buona guida, a meno che non siate già esperti.

Ecco, veniamo alla parte più difficile perché non è affatto semplice spiegare come arrivare esattamente al punto in cui parte il percorso per raggiungere le Gole del Farfa. Non ci sono indicazioni sul luogo, né a Castelnuovo di Farfa.
