Today we want to talk to you about Greccio!
It is known above all for hosting a sanctuary founded by St. Francis and for being the place where the latter invented the Native Scene. It is part of the Cammino di Francesco and, since 2016, it is part of the club of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
From the remains of the ancient buildings it is noted that Greccio became a fortified medieval castle surrounded by walls and protected by six fortified towers. He sustained fierce struggles with the neighboring countries and suffered the destruction by the soldiers of Frederick II in 1242.
Between 1223 and 1226, Greccio hosted Francesco d'Assisi several times, who here for the first time recalled the representation of the crib. The saint loved to visit these places for the beauty of the landscape, which reminded him so much of Palestine where he had visited, and for the simplicity of the inhabitants of the country. The representation of the crib was the pretext to launch a "political" message to Pope Honorius III, who at that time resided in nearby Rieti: it is not necessary to reconquer the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem through the crusades, because the birth of Jesus can be commemorated everywhere.
It suffered ups and downs until 1799 when it was again destroyed and looted by the Napoleonic army.
The ancient Medieval Village, which enjoys an excellent view over the Piana di Rieti, preserves part of the pavement of the old castle (around the 11th century), one of the entrance doors and three of the six towers, of which the largest was transformed in the 17th century in the Collegiate bell tower.
The visit cannot fail to pass through the convent of San Francesco which appears to be one of the most beautiful in Italy, together with that of Subiaco founded by San Benedetto.
Even the village is very characteristic and famous for its Christmas markets.

Oggi vogliamo parlarvi di Greccio!
È noto soprattutto per ospitare un santuario fondato da San Francesco e per essere il luogo dove quest'ultimo inventò il presepe. Fa parte del Cammino di Francesco e, dal 2016, è parte del club dei borghi più belli d'Italia.
Dai resti degli antichi fabbricati si rileva che Greccio divenne un castello medievale fortificato circondato da muraglie e protetto da sei torri fortilizie. Ebbe a sostenere fiere lotte coi paesi confinanti e subì la distruzione ad opera delle soldatesche di Federico II nel 1242.
Tra il 1223 e il 1226, Greccio ospitò più volte Francesco d'Assisi, che qui rievocò per la prima volta la rappresentazione del Presepio. Il santo amava visitare questi luoghi per la bellezza del paesaggio, che gli ricordava tanto quello della Palestina dove si era recato in visita, e per la semplicità degli abitanti del paese. La rappresentazione del presepe fu il pretesto per lanciare un messaggio "politico" a Papa Onorio III, che in quel periodo risiedeva nella vicina Rieti: non è necessario riconquistare il Santo Sepolcro di Gerusalemme per mezzo delle crociate, perché la nascita di Gesù può essere commemorata dovunque.
Subì alterne vicende fino al 1799 quando fu di nuovo distrutto e saccheggiato ad opera dell'esercito napoleonico.
L'antico Borgo Medievale, che gode di un ottimo panorama sulla Piana di Rieti, conserva parte della pavimentazione del vecchio castello (XI secolo circa), una delle porte d'ingresso e tre delle sei torri, di cui la maggiore trasformata nel XVII secolo in torre campanaria della Collegiata.
La visita non può non passare per il convento di San Francesco che risulta essere uno dei più belli d'Italia, insieme a quello di Subiaco fondato da San Benedetto.
Anche il paesino è molto caratteristico e famoso per i suoi mercatini di Natale.
Per il pranzo consigliamo il ristorante "Il nido del Corvo", unico nel suo genere e davvero delizioso!
