Subiaco, Lazio
Today we take you to Subiaco, a small town located in Lazio and about 70 km from Rome, endowed with enormous charm and natural wealth.
Subiaco is also the city of San Benedetto, which is its patron saint, while the center of the village is dominated by a majestic palace that stands on a hill. It is the Rocca Abbaziale, a building of medieval origin built in the 11th century and enlarged in the following centuries under the ownership of the Borgia family. Here it is said that the famous Lucrezia Borgia was born.
The Sacro Speco Monastery is perhaps the most sensationally architectural building along the Aniene valley, and rises overhanging the valley creating a breathtaking landscape that often causes dizziness to those who suffer from great heights.
The interiors are covered with a fresco decoration made in different periods and including some of the most important religious works in the national heritage. The oldest works are from the Byzantine period, built in the 8th century, while the first faithful depiction of St. Francis dates back to 1223, made three years before his death on the occasion of his stay in the monastery.
Inside there are remarkable frescoes of the Sienese and Umbrian-Marche schools which decorate the upper church and other rooms, made between the 14th and 15th centuries.
If you have time and want to take a walk in nature, I recommend you go in search of the San Benedetto lake, a beautiful swimming lake not to be missed.
Going down the Aniene valley and returning to the center of Subiaco you will find the Monastery of Santa Scolastica, another large monastic complex present in this location that was originally founded by San Benedetto in the sixth century.
In the 11th century, the Abbey of Santa Scolastica, which was remodeled and enlarged several times, held significant wealth in this place and for this reason the Rocca Abbaziale was erected in the strategic place where the village of Subiaco developed in the coming years.
Inside there are three different cloisters built in different periods. The first is a kiosk in cosmatesque style, with great harmony lines and colors, it was built in the XII and XII centuries.
The second cloister is in Gothic style, dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, surrounded by sharp arched windows and decorated with a symmetrically arranged hedge garden.
Finally the third cloister was built in the 16th century and has a late Renaissance style.
Finally, a visit to the Cathedral of Santa Scolastica is a must, in which the predominant style is the neoclassical one. It is of great interest in the excavation carried out in 1961 which, by removing the floor, brought to light the remains of the sixth century oratory.
In the Gothic section of the monastery, the Library still exists, in which illuminated hand-made texts were produced and kept by the best miniaturist monks summoned from the most important places in Italy and abroad.

Oggi vi portiamo a Subiaco, un piccolo paese che si trova nel Lazio e dista circa 70 Km da Roma, dotato di enorme fascino e ricchezza naturale.
Subiaco è anche la città di San Benedetto, che ne è il santo patrono, mentre il centro del borgo è dominato da un maestoso palazzo che sorge su di un colle. Esso è la Rocca Abbaziale, edificio di origine medievale costruito nell’XI secolo e ampliato nei secoli successivi sotto la proprietà della famiglia Borgia. Qui si narra sia nata la celebre Lucrezia Borgia.
Il Monastero del Sacro Speco è forse l’edificio architettonicamente più sensazionale lungo la valle dell’Aniene, e si erge a strapiombo sulla valle creando un paesaggio mozzafiato che spesso causa le vertigini a chi soffre per le grandi altezze.
Gli ambienti interni sono ricoperti da una decorazione a fresco realizzata in epoche differenti e comprendente alcune delle opere religiose più importanti nel patrimonio nazionale. Le opere più antiche sono di epoca bizantina, realizzate nell’VIII secolo, mentre risale al 1223 la prima fedele raffigurazione di San Francesco realizzata tre anni prima della sua morte in occasione del suo soggiorno nel monastero.
Al suo interno si trovano notevoli affreschi di scuola senese e umbro-marchigiana che decorano la chiesa superiore e altri ambienti, realizzati tra il XIV e il XV secolo.
Se hai tempo a disposizione e vuoi fare due passi nella natura, ti consiglio di andare alla ricerca del Laghetto di San Benedetto, bellissimo laghetto balneabile da non farsi mancare.
Scendendo lungo la valle dell’Aniene e tornando verso il centro di Subiaco si incontra il Monastero di Santa Scolastica, altro grande complesso monastico presente in questa località che venne originariamente fondato da San Benedetto nel VI secolo.
Nell’XI secolo l’Abbazia di Santa Scolastica, più volte rimaneggiata e ampliata, deteneva in questo luogo ingenti ricchezze e proprio per questo motivo venne eretta la Rocca Abbaziale nel luogo strategico in cui negli anni a venire si sviluppò il borgo di Subiaco.
Al suo interno troviamo tre differenti chiostri realizzati in epoche differenti. Il primo è un chiosco in stile cosmatesco, dalle linee e dai colori delineanti grande armonia, esso venne realizzato nel XII e XII secolo.
Il secondo chiostro è in stile gotico, risalente al XV e XVI secolo, circondato da finestre ad arco acuto e decorato con un giardino di siepi ben regolate in modo simmetrico.
Infine il terzo chiostro venne realizzato nel XVI secolo e presenta uno stile tardorinascimentale.
Infine è imperdibile la visita della Cattedrale di Santa Scolastica nella quale lo stile predominante è quello neoclassico. In essa è di grande interesse lo scavo realizzato nel 1961 che, rimuovendo il pavimento, riportò alla luce i resti dell’oratorio del VI secolo.
Nella sezione gotica del monastero è oggi ancora esistente la Biblioteca nella quale venivano prodotti e conservati testi miniati realizzati a mano dai più bravi monaci miniatori convocati dalle più importanti località d’Italia e dall’estero.
Imperdibile anche il corso fluviale dell’Aniene, dove poter fare un bel bagno, ma anche rafting!
